According to NDSU Extension Soil Science Specialist Brady Goettl, farmers should delay fall nitrogen applications until soil temperatures cool down. “My best recommendation for making sure that nitrogen stays available and is economically going to make an impact next year is to just hold off on that application.” Goettl has received numerous inquiries about the late-season heat wave and its impact on the nitrogen application. “Once soil temperatures start to drop below that 50 degrees threshold in the morning, we can start confidently applying anhydrous ammonia.”
