It’s both a tough harvest season for both farmers and custom harvesters in the Southern Plains. Based in Colby, Kansas, U.S. Custom Harvesters President Jim Deibert says hail has been the problem in his home state. “The wheat that didn’t get hail was running around 50 bushels, but almost every field had some sort of hail. We’re in South Dakota now, and hoping for a better crop as we keep moving north.” Despite below average bushels, Deibert says both protein and test weight for winter wheat has been good. “I haven’t had any wheat all summer below 60 pounds, even in the poor yielding conditions.” Harvest Hotline is sponsored, in part, by the Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council.
