Despite ongoing dry conditions, South Dakota farmers made solid planting progress last week. Topsoil moisture is 72 percent short to very short, and subsoil is 80 percent short to very short. Spring wheat planting reached 27 percent, well ahead of average, and oat planting hit 35 percent, up from just 2 percent this time last year. Winter wheat conditions remain mostly fair to poor, with only 3 percent of the crop headed.
