The amount of snow on the ground could pose trouble for the calving season. “I know people who calve in April are expecting less snow and warmer temperatures,” said Laura Edwards, state climatologist, South Dakota. “It can lead to muddy pens and a lack of protection for those animals.” A slow melt-off would be the best scenario to prevent flooding. “We are looking at high potential of flooding in the James River, Red River of the North, and the upper regions of the Big Sioux River.”
