The storms that moved through South Dakota into Minnesota and Iowa on Tuesday are considered a Derecho. A Derecho as an area of wind damage longer than 240 miles and wind gusts of at least 58 miles-per-hour. National Weather Service Meteorologist in Charge Jim Scarlett says there were lots of 80 to 90 mile-per-hour winds in South Dakota on Tuesday. “Our biggest hailstone we’ve seen is up to softball size. The strongest winds are at 96 miles per hour in Huron.” The big storms missed Aberdeen, South Dakota, but there was at least a quarter of an inch of rain. That adds up with last weekend’s rainfall. “The Sunday night before Independence Day, we received two to four inches of rain. It’s been extremely opposite of last summer when it was dry. Now, it’s wet.”
