China’s hog industry has overgone an evolution after the African Swine Fever swept through the country. Now, with the shift to feeding hogs in larger facilities up to 12 stories high, Aimpoint Research Chief Economist Gregg Doud says China has become one of the largest importers of corn. “One of the biggest changes in the history of agriculture globally, at least in my lifetime, was China banning the swill feeding of hogs as a result of African Swine Fever. Half the hogs in planet are in China, half of those hogs were eating swill or food scraps. You’ve got to replace that food with something. That’s the huge dynamic where we’re seeing China becoming one of the biggest importers of corn. A lot of the hog operations are moving to confinement operations that are two, three, eight stories high.” Doud expects China to continue their competitive imports of corn as a feed resource in 2022.
