Kluis Commodities market analyst Jacob Burks says there are many different factors impacting Mississippi River basis levels, including the port damage at New Orleans. “On the river, we fell 40 cents in one day. Ethanol plants have been holding out for new crop corn. New crop harvest will be here faster than expected.” Burks says harvesting corn early may allow farmers to catch very good corn basis levels. “If you can keep harvest moving, you can get in on old crop basis. There’s also a lot of corn trying to get a spot because it’s difficult to get down the river right now.”
