The U.S. has restored market access for fresh Brazilian beef exports and those in the industry are reacting. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has “serious concerns” about the re-entry. NCBA questions the lack of scientific evidence used to justify Brazil’s initial access in 2016. South Dakota representative Dusty Johnson is urging USDA to address safety concerns with Brazilian beef imports to ensure consumer confidence at the meat case. In 2017, the U.S. halted fresh beef imports from Brazil after some shipments failed food safety checks. Brazil is one of the largest beef producers in the world, exporting $7.3 billion last year.
