Innovus Agra LLC President Bret Oelke says extracting more revenue-per-acre to improve the bottom line is possible even during a tough market conditions. However, it takes more work and outside-the-box marketing. “Farmers will have to find ways where they can add dimes or 20 cents at a time to the price of their wheat, soybeans, corn and dry edible beans. Find ways either through putting on a hedge and taking it off at an appropriate time and then make it a cash forward sale, rolling contracts or when Chicago wheat is out of balance with Minneapolis wheat, perhaps they need to use Chicago as their hedge contracts and then, convert them over to Minneapolis when the price relationship changes to a more normal conversation.” Oelke says it is important to be a student of the market.
