The new Dairy Margin Coverage sign-up is open. Minnesota Farm Service Agency Executive Director Joe Martin tells dairy farmers the DMC program functions like revenue insurance. Similar to crop insurance, it offers a price protection between the all milk price and feed costs. “Farmers need to make two decisions to enroll. First, what their coverage level will be and then, they need to select the amount of milk production they want to cover.” Farmers will also need to decide whether to sign up for one year or five years. Martin says there are built in benefits for signing up for five years. The State of Minnesota will also provide assistance if farmers participate for five years. DMC sign-up is open through September 20. Considering DMC? Check out the University of Wisconsin’s DMC decision support tool and learn more about the program.
