In 2016 and 2017, the Environmental Protection Agency granted 2.25 billion gallons in small refinery waivers to the Renewable Fuel Standard. That’s far more than a recent Renewable Fuels Association estimate of 1.6 billion gallons. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley was upset with the news, describing it as “a gut punch to Midwest farmers.” Minnesota Congressman Collin Peterson agreed, releasing a statement saying corn and soybean farmers are “fed up” with the EPA actions.
